REMEMBRANCE and awareness events will be held in Bradford to mark a worldwide day aiming to prevent suicide.

Mind in Bradford is holding an event on Monday giving people who have lost a loved one time to come together and remember them in a safe, supportive space. The Remembrance event will be at the mental health charity’s base in Kenburgh House, Manor Row, from 11am to 12.30pm.

The commemoration will include a poetry reading and time to remember loved ones and some informal time to mingle, talk or sit quietly. People are invited to bring a photo of their loved one.

Mind in Bradford is also holding its first Twitter hour between 1pm-2pm on Monday. Using the hashtags #MindinBradford and #WSPD, Twitter users are invited to ask questions or share thoughts, and a mental health professional will tweet replies and comments.

Figures from the charity show that the Bradford district’s suicide rate is about the national average, but levels of depression are higher than seen elsewhere in the country. There were 76 suicides in the district between 2013 and 2015.

Helen Davey, chief executive of Mind in Bradford, said: “There is no need for anyone to struggle on their own with their mental health as support is there. Mind in Bradford is just one of many organisations in the district which can help.

“The suicides figures are sad and shocking. Our aim is to help more people in more places across Bradford and Craven to have better health and wellbeing.”

Figures from the suicide prevention campaign say suicide is the leading cause of death in people aged 15 to 24 in many European countries. Organisers of World Suicide Prevention Day are inviting people to light a candle near a window at 8pm on Monday in support of suicide prevention and awareness, survivors of suicide and for the memory of loved lost ones.

Bradford Cathedral will be open from 7.30pm for anyone to visit and light a candle.
