A BEDROOM was severely damaged in a house fire when a cigarette was not discarded properly.

Firefighters from Fairweather Green and Illingworth were called to a home in West Lane, Thornton, at 7pm on Thursday.

Watch Manager Steven O'Keefe, from Fairweather Green Fire Station, said the fire started after a cigarette was not stubbed out properly.

The only occupant of the home, a man, was not in the house when the fire broke out and had been elsewhere for 45 minutes.

Watch Manager O'Keefe said: "There was quite a lot of damage to an upstairs bedroom, but no one was in at the time.

"The fire was well developed when we arrived and the crew did well to get in early and stop it because it was a big fire.

"We want to remind people to be mindful when they are discrading cigarettes."
