A FASHION store is re-locating its Bradford branch onto one of the city’s main shopping streets.

Yours is currently based in a unit inside the Kirkgate Centre, but is planning to move into another unit in the centre – one that fronts onto pedestrianised Kirkgate.

A new planning application submitted to Bradford Council would see a new shopfront at 50 Kirkgate, the long-empty former bank unit, including replacement of damaged windows.

It also calls for new illuminated signage.

Signs in the existing store say the move will take place next month.

The relocation will give the plus-sized fashion store a much more prominent location, and bring back to use an empty 1,980 square foot unit on a road that has been blighted with shop closures in recent years.

Despite the loss of stores such as That’s Entertainment, Costa and PoundWorld in the past year, Kirkgate has seen new stores open on the street recently, including discount clothing store Fashion Nova, Honest Freddie’s and shoe store Lime.

Catherine Riley, Kirkgate Shopping’s Centre Manager, commented: “We are delighted the Yours store will be relocating within the centre and trading from a bright, new street facing unit as of September.”

The re-location of Yours is part of a major shake-up planned for the shopping centre.

It was recently announced that a new national retailer is set to open a new 25,000 sq ft anchor store in the centre in spring, with an announcement on the name of the new shop to be made next month.

Works to the new store are expected to begin in September on Westgate Mall and Darley Mall.

The relocation of Yours will help make space for the new development, and bar Bentley’s Live Lounge will also be re-located to another, larger unit in the centre.

The Kirkgate Centre has seen major changes in recent years.

When The Broadway shopping centre opened in 2015 a number of stores in Kirkgate closed – including the large units occupied by Boots and WHSmith.

Earlier this year Argos also announced that it would be closing its large Kirkgate store.

But a number of recent announcements have provided a welcome boost to the centre, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016.

As well as the new anchor store, plans were recently submitted to Bradford Council to turn a large, empty corner shop unit on the corner of Westgate and Godwin Street into a new bar and restaurant.

And the former Costa has been turned into a pop-up art gallery for Bradford’s Peace Museum.

A decision on the signage application is expected in October.
