THE great-great-grandson of Sir Titus Salt will be on hand at the former home of the Salt family next month when it opens its doors to the public.

Milner Field Farm, in Gilstead, will be open to the public on Saturday, September 8, and Sunday 9, for Heritage Open Days.

The mansion was bought by Titus Salt Jr in 1869, which includes a private workshop where Titus Jr did woodwork.

Nick Salt will be offering guided tours of the family home - which is now a ruin - on behalf of Saltaire History Club, and is bringing some rarely-seen precious family heirlooms with him from his home in Wales, which include Titus Jr’s tools and items he handcrafted.

Among the items Titus Jr created are an ivory mason’s mallet which was used by Titus Jr’s son Gordon - Nick Salt’s grandfather - to lay the foundation stone of Milner Field , and his mahogany workbench will be on show.

Colin Coates, chair of the Saltaire History Club, said: “This unique object directly links those coming to our Milner Field event to the construction of the now-lost mansion and to the legendary Salt family.”
