A CAR park “that no-one wants” will be built on Green Belt land near a Bradford primary school.

When Kirklees Council recently approved plans for an employment park on the North Bierley Waste Water Treatment Works, one of the “mitigation measures” was that the developers create a car park for parents and teachers of Woodlands CE Primary School in Oakenshaw. The car park would be needed due to increased traffic in the area created by the scheme.

On Thursday Bradford Council’s Regulatory and Appeals Committee was asked to approve the car park.

They were told that if the car park plans were refused, the employment site, proposed by Keyland Developments, would still go ahead, and could leave the school without any nearby on-street parking.

Despite numerous objections to the location of the car park, including from the school, the plans were approved.

People had criticised the idea of building a car park on Green Belt land, and said the location would cause traffic safety issues.

Councillors pointed out that although no-one in the area seemed to want the car park, the decision by Kirklees Council to approve the industrial park meant not building one would badly effect the school

Councillor Mike Pollard (Cons, Baildon) said: "In this case the issues have been caused by the decisions of another authority. They have created the exceptional circumstances that require a car park to be built here."

One condition of the approval was that the developers replace the proposed zebra crossing with a pelican crossing.
