COUNCILLORS have paid tribute to former Bradford Mayor Paul Hockney.

The former Liberal councillor, and older brother of David Hockney, died earlier this month aged 88, and was an influential player in Bradford’s civic and political life during the 1970s and 80s.

He was also Lord Mayor during the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, and is credited with helping to set up Nell Bank outdoor activity centre in Ilkley.

A memorial service was held at Christ Church in Ilkley this afternoon.

And a minute's silence was held at a meeting of Bradford Council yesterday.

At the meeting Councillor David Ward (Lib Dem, Bolton and Undercliffe) said: "If you never met Paul Hockney, you missed a treat. He was a character to say the least.

"He filled every room he walked into. He was related to a famous painter, but rather than being overshadowed, it was the reverse, a lot of people referred to David as Paul's younger brother."

He described Nell Bank, used by thousands of children each year, as Paul Hockney's "greatest legacy."
