FIREFIGHTERS have warned of the dangers of discarding cigarettes on dry ground after a fire at a train station near Keighley last night.

A dropped cigarette is thought to have caused the blaze, which damaged a wooden fence at the side of a footpath at Damems station, on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.

Fire crews from Bingley station were called to the incident at around 7.30pm, spending around an hour extinguishing the fire and making the area safe.

Dave Dixon, watch commander at Bingley, said: "People need to very careful discarding cigarettes, as the ground is very dry at the moment. It's dangerous, and it's littering, so people just shouldn't do it."

Later in the evening, at around 11.45pm, crews from Bradford were called to a chip pan fire at a house in Manningham Lane.

Crews removed the chip pan to the open air and led the occupier out of the house to safety using a breathing apparatus set and a high-powered fan to remove the smoke.

The occupier of the property suffered slight smoke inhalation, and after being checked over by paramedics at the scene, did not go to hospital.

Just after 4am this morning, crews from across the district were called to assist with an oil tank on fire at a metal processing plant on Hope Street in Halifax.

Firefighters from Odsal, Fairweather Green, and Cleckheaton helped crews from across the county control the fire, which had engulfed a warehouse.

One man suffering from smoke inhalation was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Firefighters from stations across the Bradford district have also been providing cover for colleagues involved in fighting the fierce fire still burning on Saddleworth Moor.
