TWO Parkside School students have earned their wings after volunteering at Denholme Community Library.

Sam Strudwick and Jack Evans have volunteered at the library for the past three months as part of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

They have helped for an hour each week, first with the running of the library and more recently preparing for the library's RAF 100 celebrations.

The RAF centenary display was on show this month as part of National Volunteer Week when the library presented certificates to volunteers and organisations who had given their time and energy of the past 12 months.

Among those present was Hayley Evans, Parkside school's head of science and the Duke of Edinburgh or coordinator.

She said: "Sam and Jack showed me the displays that they had created following research that they had done with other members of the community, including people who have served in the RAF.

"They had also arranged activities for people to complete during their visit, including a jigsaw of one of the fighter jets and a history quiz about the RAF.

"Both students have now completed the volunteering section of their award, however they still want to continue to volunteer.

Denholme Community Library, in the Mechanics Institute, is run by a team of local volunteers who took over the library's management from Bradford Council.

The RAF display, in the library's Reading/Local Studies Room, can be seen until June 21.

There will be a coffee morning with bacon butties on June 30, from 10.30am to 11.30am with books for sale and a raffle.
