THEY are at the sharp end of the industry.

Hairdressers John and Katy Allen realised after a combined career of 77 years the lack of knowledge of the tools of their trade.

With the expertise of a retired Japanese scissor-smith, the couple learnt the skill of sharpening scissors and about the metals used in production as well as the benefits of ergonomic design.

Now they are busy developing Akito scissors with the aim of passing on their knowledge through the in-depth 'Scissorology' courses launched in the UK, Cuba, India and Spain where they set up home after emigrating from Yeadon.

Initially John hit the headlines as despite emigrating to Spain, he often travelled back to their home town to tend clients' tresses.

Now the couple are busy concentrating on developing Akito scissors, and supporting charities in the process.

As well as donating five per cent of profits each year to hairdressing charities, Akito has also supplied scissors to organisations including The Hairdressers' Charity; Mission in Mumbai; CIVs Kenya and Lions Barber Collective.

Closer to home, the couple have collaborated with the national charity Haircuts4Homeless, set up by hairdresser Stewart Roberts, to support a service at St George's Crypt in Leeds.
