FOUR Bradford men are embarking on a 3,000-mile week-long round trip to Benidorm in a banger for an annual UK to Spain road challenge.

The team is part of the yearly Benidorm or Bust event which requires entrants to drive to the Spanish holiday city, usually for fun but with a chance of raising money for a good cause.

Paul Wilson, 42, from Idle, who runs LEJ Property Solutions, is undertaking the annual challenge along with teammates Steve Gill, also from Idle, and who works for Farsley Transport, and Wyke men Neil Cox and Robert Crombie.

“It will be a fun trip but we will also be raising money for Will’s Way, a charity set up in the name of young Stanningley rugby player Will Barker.

“In September 2016 when he was 15, Will was diagnosed with a Grade 2 brain tumour. Despite adversity Will’s bravery and courage is an example to everyone and we wanted to try and help in some small way,” explained Mr Wilson.

The four men clubbed together to buy an old car as the general remit to taking part in the challenge was to use a classic car or a banger.

He added: “The car, which is a 1999 Volvo V70 estate, cost us more to do up that we thought it would, but it is done and now ready to go.

“We set off at midnight on Tuesday, June 12, to get to the ferry at Dover.

“We will each be driving six hours a day for four days to get to Benidorm where we will stay for a couple of nights before driving back.

“We’ll be driving in shifts to get back so it should only take us a day or so.

“It’s not a race, and there are no prizes for getting there first, but there will be a few ‘challenges’ on the way. There will be sat nav references to follow and things with starting points and meeting points where we will have to take a picture of the car.

“Around 170 cars are taking place this year, a few less than last year, and some of the drivers have taken part in previous years.

“We expect to see quite a few old classics when we get to the ferry. People take part from all over the UK.

“Some drivers scrap their car over when they get to Benidorm and donate the money to the charity they are supporting before flying back.

“We have decided to drive ours back to Bradford.

“We hope to raise at least £1,000 for Will’s Way and have a fundraising page where people can donate.”

The team has put an initial goal of £500 on the Virgin Money Giving page and has so far raised around £235.

The expedition has been sponsored by LEJ Property Solutions, Farsley Transport, Ace of Vapes and WH Signs.
