A SERIES of new summer markets are to take place in Bingley on the first Saturdays of June, July, August and October.

The markets will include Bingley’s long-standing fish, cheese and flower traders as well as new stalls selling fresh, local produce and artisan crafts.

There will also be face-painting for children and entertainment to add to the fun and community atmosphere.

The markets are a response to requests from residents and are being held by Bingley Town Council with Yorkshire Farmers Markets.

Cllr Ros Dawson (pictured, right, with Councillor Edwina Simpson) chair of Bingley Town Council and part of the team of councillors and volunteers organising the markets, said: “Bingley’s a lovely place to shop and the summer markets will give an extra reason for residents and visitors to pop into town. You’ll be able to chat to the traders about their products – where they come from, how they were made, why they’re special – whilst enjoying some musical accompaniment and fun, free entertainment for children.

“Many residents have told us they want a thriving and vibrant market in the town and it’s clear that the benefits of a popular and regular event would be brilliant.”

Bingley’s market dates back to medieval times and the Town Council hopes to keep that heritage alive by offering a relaxed 21st century family retail experience. The summer markets concept is based on feedback from a survey carried out by Bingley Town Council last year, in which over 600 people took part, as well as research and guidance from NABMA, the National Association of British Market Authorities of which the Town Council is a member. This year’s markets are a pilot and will be evaluated in the autumn.

The markets take place in the market square on Saturday, June 2, July 7, August 4 and October 6.
