A CLUB night which was due to be held at the former Bijou nightclub  in Bingley was cancelled at the 11th hour after windows were smashed in a frenzied attack.

A temporary licence had been granted for a ‘Danny T Take Over @ 11a’ to be held at the Bijou premises, in Chapel Lane, on Saturday, May 19, with tickets sold online.

The premises closed and had its licence revoked late last year following the death of 26-year-old James Etherington, in November.

Mr Etherington was assaulted at the premises and died of his injuries 10 days later.

Three men aged 23, 30 and 31 were arrested in relation to the incident and released pending investigation.

Overnight on Friday to Saturday morning, someone smashed the front and side windows of the club.

When the T&A visited on Saturday, the glass appeared to have been smashed in 17 different places.

11a later posted on Facebook: “Hello folks, 11a will be rescheduling this evening’s event.

“Unforeseen circumstances dictate that rescheduling is the only option. Ticket holders will receive a refund and info.

“Thanks for your support. Danny and the team will see you soon.”

Another application for a temporary licence will need to be made to Bradford Council’s licensing department.

Earlier this week it was announced a temporary event notice had been submitted for the premises, under the name 11a, to open for one night between 9pm on Saturday and 4.30am on Sunday.

Bingley Town Council had advised people on its Facebook page that permission was down to the police and environmental health and that the police had no objections.

This prompted a backlash among Bingley residents who said the nightclub should not reopen out of respect for Mr Etherington.

Candles and flowers could be seen outside the club on Sunday.

One respondent to Danny T’s message read: “No nightclub in Bingley, thank you. a nice florists, fish and chips shop, anything but a nightclub!”

While another had a different viewpoint: “It’s sad what happened but it was a while ago now,” they said. “Can’t mourn it forever. If they wanna throw another event go ahead put (Bingley) town on the map.”

Bingley ward councillor David Heseltine (Con) said: “I was surprised the police didn’t object to the temporary licence.
“I don’t think they get the mood of the people of Bingley over what happened there.

“People are appalled. Community confidence in the venue has gone.

“In my view, a different use for that spot would assist the family and friends of the young man who died, rather than someone cocking a snook at them.

“It (the premises) would be better off as something else because it will always be a focal point of what happened.”

West Yorkshire Police confirmed they had been called to a report of criminal damage to a commercial premises in Chapel Lane.

The Telegraph & Argus contacted 11a for comment.
