A farm boy from the Mirpur district of Pakistan had become Britain’s first Asian Lord Mayor. Councillor Mohammed Ajeeb, 47, took office at Bradford City Hall at 11 am, by saying a prayer for those who had suffered in the Valley Parade fire disaster. The council chamber was more than usually packed, including national TV, radio and newspaper reporters as Coun Ajeeb was aware, the eyes of the world were fixed firmly on Bradford. However, a decision to fly two City Hall flags at full mast to honour the new Lord Mayor of Bradford had sparked an angry reaction. Complaints were flooding in to City Hall stating that the flags should remain at half-mast until the last victim of the Bradford fire is buried.
