WORK to repair a broken sewer pipe has caused a main road in Cleckheaton to be completely closed to traffic while emergency repairs take place.

Yorkshire Water has confirmed that Spen Lane - a key route between Cleckheaton and Gomersal - is closed while investigations take place, and it is not yet known when the road is likely to reopen.

Work began on Monday, and notices posted nearby detail diversions to a number of bus services while the road is closed, at least until Friday.

During the closure, which affects bus numbers 253, 254 and 255, services will be diverted between Gomersal Hill Top and Cleckheaton via A651 Oxford Road, A62 Leeds Road and A638 Bradford Road.

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: “We were made aware of a broken sewer pipe on Spen Lane in Cleckheaton with our team dispatched to the scene as quickly as possible.

"Investigations are ongoing to find out the extent of the damage and for health and safety reasons we unfortunately had to close the road.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused and a diversion is in place.”
