THE enduring wintry weather forced a women’s cycling club to postpone a Suffragette-themed ride.

The Queensbury Queens of the Mountain had been planning to complete the team cycle in full Suffragette garb yesterday to mark 100 years since women over 30 won the right to vote.

Club chairman Vicky Mathwin said they would instead hold the event on April 22.

She said women’s rights were still very much on the agenda in the world of cycling.

“At the moment we are debating the principle of podium girls for cycling,” she said.

“It’s all part of the same issue. We think women’s sport generally is under-represented by the media.

“So when a young girl watches sport on TV, she is likely to see men competing and podium girls who are there as an accessory to men’s sport.”

The ride was among a host of sporting fixtures and weekend events which have been cancelled or postponed due to the cold snap brought by the Beast from the East and Storm Emma.

Although the snow has been thawing, a yellow weather warning for ice will remain in place until 11am tomorrow, with the Met Office also forecasting rain, mist and fog patches.
