A BRADFORD MP has spoken of his “alarm” at low wages coupled with high levels of household debt.

In a debate in Parliament today, Labour’s Bradford East MP Imran Hussain said too many people were worried about buying school uniforms, paying for holidays or even affording their rent or mortgage.

He said: “After seven wasted years, wages are still lower than they were in 2010, self employed people are on average paid less than they were a generation ago and six million people are earning less than the living wage.”

John Glen MP, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, said the Government was “taking a proactive approach to support borrowers and to aid people to manage their money”.

He said the national living wage had increased, as had childcare support.
