SPEED bumps could be installed on a Bingley road despite objections from some residents.

Councillors on the Shipley Area Committee have been invited to approve plans for two sets of "speed cushions" on Park Road between Villa Road and Lady Lane at a meeting on Wednesday.

Residents had raised concerns about the difficulty of crossing the street to access Prince of Wales Park and a nearby school.

A council survey in 2017 found 10,406 vehicles used the 30mph road in a single day and nearly half of them were breaking the speed limit. Four motorists drove faster than 50mph on the stretch.

But five people objected to plans for speed bumps. One objector said the bumps could "cause discomfort, spinal injuries and air pollution" and called for speed cameras to be installed instead.

Councillors have been asked to overrule the objections and approve the plans.

Cllr Hawarun Hussain (Green Party, Shipley) welcomed the plans and said: "Safety is the biggest issue. We can't stop people from putting their foot down but we can make it harder for them.

"Council budgets are so tight that if we do get speed bumps it means there were lots of reasons for them.

"No parent wants to be fearful of their child going out and not coming back because of dangerous roads and no adult wants to be worried about someone running them over.

"Hopefully it would make the drivers slow down and make the road safer."

The council is also proposing to widen the footpath on the southern side of Park Road near Villa Road to improve visibility at the junction. Four letters supporting the scheme have been submitted to the council.

Cllr David Heseltine (Conservative, Bingley), chair of Shipley Area Committee, said: "It's a very, very busy road with thousands of cars a day and it's quite a steep road. Lady Lane in its own right is also a busy road. The aim is to slow the traffic and give a bit of a better sight line, and help people get across the road.

"Obviously the area committee will have to consider the objections and progress from there. We always try to take into consideration comments in favour and against.

"Ideally people would drive at the limits and then we wouldn't need all these bumps and chicanes."
