Plans to demolish Bradford's magistrates' court and the old police station to create more space for the park in the heart of Bradford have been submitted.

The site of the buildings forms the foundation for the second phase of the City Park project - the business forest.

Regeneration company Yorkshire Forward took over The Tyrls when the police moved into new headquarters in Nelson Street at the beginning of the year, and magistrates' courts will be relocated to a site near the law courts in Drake Street.

The centrepiece mirror pool in Centenary Square - in the first phase of the multi-million pound scheme - can be completed without these buildings being demolished, but the application is to prepare the site for the adjoining business forest.

Bradford Council and Bradford Centre Regeneration submitted a £24.5 million bid to the Big Lottery Fund's Living Landmarks scheme in May. If successful, this money would be used to pay for the mirror pool plaza and the proposals for Centenary Square and Norfolk Gardens, at a cost of £29.8 million.

Stephen Talboys, director of regeneration at Bradford Centre Regeneration, said: "As we wait for a decision on funding from the Big Lottery Fund, two applications have been submitted. The first sets out the final designs, based on the feedback from the public consultation, to develop the Park's centrepiece, the Mirror Pool in Centenary Square and the quiet reflection area of Norfolk Gardens.

"A separate, conservation application has also been submitted for the initial stages of developing the second phase of the Park, the Business Forest. The Business Forest completes the City Park and will come at a later stage consisting primarily of office accommodation with some leisure and residential space.

"It will be based on the site currently occupied by the old police station and the magistrates' court.

"The Park will create a unique space right in the city centre that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and will act as a stunning centre piece at the heart of Bradford."

A decision is expected from the Lottery in November. Bradford is competing with 22 other schemes across the country.
