LATEST: First snowfall of winter - and more is on its way
Heavy snowfall is headed to Bradford on Sunday, the Met Office has warned as it extended its weather warning for snow and ice through the whole weekend.
The organisation had already issued a yellow warning for snow and ice in Bradford and parts of West Yorkshire on Friday.
But now it says there is an 80% chance of heavy snow in Bradford around 1am on Friday, and a 90% likelihood heavy snow on Sunday falling from noon until at least 9pm, with temperatures only reaching 1°C.
A spokesman said: "This could lead to road, rail and air travel delays, with the potential for vehicles to become stranded or public transport to be cancelled. Rural communities with limited access routes could become cut off."
Gritters will be out on the roads tonight and Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, portfolio holder for regeneration, planning and transport, said: “Our gritters will be checking and treating high ground and problem areas from 8pm and we will begin gritting the 700-mile priority one route and footpaths from 5am tomorrow morning.
“The council will monitor the situation and revise our plans as conditions develop.
“The priority one network covers high volume highways and roads to schools, hospitals, isolated communities and ambulance, police and fire stations. These are the roads the council grits first.
“Once the priority one routes are treated, the council’s highways service begins to grit the rest of the district’s roads.”
