A COUPLE had a lucky escape after an early morning fire in a house in Ilkley is thought to have been started by a wood burner.

The man and the woman were woken by their smoke detector and managed to raise the alarm before escaping their home uninjured.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue received the call at 4.44am today that there was a blaze in the four storey property on Sunset Drive.

Crews from Ilkley, Otley, Silsden and Rawdon stations attended to put out the fire, which caused extensive fire and smoke damage to all four floors of the building, which is now uninhabitable.

The fire is believed to be caused by a wood burner in basement, although a spokesperson for the fire service said the cause was still under investigation.
