A CAMPAIGN asking residents to bin their wet wipes and sanitary items instead of flushing them has received the backing of a local MP.
Batley & Spen MP Tracy Brabin has supported the ‘Be a binner’ campaign set up by Yorkshire water in its top ten sewage blockage hotspots.
Birstall, Heckmondwike, and Batley all feature on the list, and Ms Brabin met engineers, pictured, who look after the sewers in her constituency.
She said: “Visiting Yorkshire Water provided me with a fascinating insight into the consequences of flushing products labelled as flushable, and I encourage families to bin, rather than flush their wet wipes.
“It was great to meet the Yorkshire Water engineering team who show skill, excellence and commitment to keeping our sewage pipes clear”.
Sewer blockages cost Yorkshire Water £2 million every year.
