A TEENAGER hopes to add to her £5,000 total raised at two fun days in supporting a cancer charity in memory of her great-grandmother.

Penny Ham, 13, is holding her next event in honour of Marianne Liput, of Bradford, who died of leukaemia aged 90 in June 2015. All proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK.

The teenager has raised £5,381 from her previous events.

This year’s fun day will take place on Sunday between 1pm and 5pm at her house in Coppice View, Idle.

It will feature a barbecue, cake sale and raffle. Penny has contacted a number of companies herself to donate raffle prizes, which this year include a hamper from Morrisons and family days out at Skipton Castle, the Bronte Parsonage Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre, York. She will also hold a teddy tombola, featuring the sale of her own teddy bears.

Penny, a student at Leeds West Academy, hopes to raise more than £3,000 for the charity from the day.

Her mother, Claire Ham, 37, said: “It’s great. There are going to be between 60 and 100 people at the house on Sunday. It takes a lot of planning for weeks before to put it on.

“I’m really proud of her. It has been nice to carry it on over the last three years.”

Penny also organised a sponsored charity 14-mile bike ride from Shipley to Leeds with her younger brother’s football team, Thackley Lightning (Thackley Juniors), which took place on Sunday. The proceeds are expected to be a few hundreds pounds for the charity.

The charity which has benefited from Penny’s fundraising paid tribute to her.

Nicki Embleton, Cancer Research UK in Yorkshire spokesman, said: “Cancer Research UK wishes Penny all the best for her third fun day and hope it will be another great success.

“We have been very impressed with Penny’s exceptional fundraising efforts for Cancer Research UK and are very grateful for all she has done. For someone so young to raise so much for charity is amazing.

“As well as being a lasting legacy for her great-grandmother, Penny’s dedication and determination will support Cancer Research UK’s vital work to help more people beat cancer in the future.”
