YORKSHIRE director of cricket development Ian Dews has challenged his Second XI Trophy winners to go on and do it at the next level.

The young Vikings saw off a Middlesex side including former England Test batsman Nick Compton in their one-day final at Headingley.

Opening batsman Harry Brook struck 112 off 103 balls to underpin a score of 265-5 from 38.4 overs in a rain-affected clash.

The England under-19s player's third second-team century was backed up by fifties from captain Will Rhodes and Ryan Gibson.

Middlesex were set a revised target of 279 from 38 overs under lights and they did not get close despite a top-score of 57 by Compton.

Barnsley-born off-spinner Jack Shutt claimed 4-19 from 3.3 overs, the last four wickets to fall, as the visitors were bowled out for 179. Josh Shaw and Jordan Thompson had taken two apiece.

Dews said: "When you consider we have five away with England and 14 down at Taunton that we can't select from – 19 players in total – it's a great effort.

"A few Academy lads, there's not many names on their shirts. But I said going into the game that this is the side that won trophies in 2014 as an Academy side and hopefully we can keep them in now.

"It's always good to win trophies. It shows that the lads are progressing and that's the key – that they can keep progressing.

"The next step is for them to win trophies at the next level and there's a few of these that will go on and do that."

Dews reflected: "We were always in the game with the score that we posted, even with the weather, so it was a solid performance.

"In the second innings, we were on it from ball one. The fielding was pretty good and we bowled good areas and kept chipping in with wickets.

"It got a little bit nervous when Nick Compton started to play shots all around the wicket but once we got that wicket, Jack Shutt came on and sorted it out for us."
