BRADFORD is already the undisputed curry capital of the UK after winning the prestigious title a record six times in a row.

Now the city is set to cement its reputation and become a centre of excellence for international cuisine thanks to an ambitious new development.

If it goes ahead the plan will see an empty office building transformed into a world-class training facility for chefs. The scheme also includes a 25-room hotel, conference facilities and, of course, a restaurant.

What a splendid idea.

Not only will this plan transform a rather sad-looking building but it will add another string to Bradford’s business bow.

The curry industry is already a hugely important part of the city’s economy.

It is a major local employer and an important tourist draw. Diners travel from all over the globe to eat at world-famous restaurants such as Akbars, Aagrah, Jinnah and My Lahore.

The district is also home to some of the largest manufacturers and wholesalers of spices, herbs and lentils who supply the curry industry.

According to the organisers of the World Curry Festival this home-grown supply chain is worth £500m to the city’s economy.

If it goes ahead this new centre will help Bradford become the UK’s leading city in curry training, production and manufacturing.

And well placed to retain its title as the curry capital of the country for a record seventh consecutive time no doubt.
