COUNCILLOR Imran Khan is the new deputy leader of Bradford Council's ruling Labour group after a vote among his party colleagues last night.

Cllr Khan, who represents the Bowling and Barkerend ward, and is also the authority's portfolio holder for education, employment and skills, fills the position vacated by long-serving councillor Val Slater.

After last night's Bradford Labour Group annual meeting, he said: "I am delighted to have been elected this evening by Labour Group as deputy leader.

"It’s a great honour to do the role in the city where I was born and brought up.

"I am looking forward to working with the leader to make sure Bradford district realises all the opportunities available."

Of Cllr Slater, who announced she was standing down as deputy leader on Monday, he added: "I want to pay tribute to Val who has done great work over the last few years as deputy.

"It is generous of her to think about succession planning as she prepares to stand down as a councillor in 2018. I have a hard act to follow but am really looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

Council leader, Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe said: "I’ve worked well with Imran now for a number of years on the executive.

"He is very able, dynamic and passionate about the district. I’m looking forward to working with him in his new role.

"Val has made a great contribution as deputy, creating a legacy of which she can be rightly proud. I want to thank her for her support, commitment and dedication to the role.”

Cllr Khan joined the decision-making executive two years ago.
