AN IMPROVING secondary school which was placed in special measures less than three years ago has won national recognition for its “excellent” performance in 2016.

The BBG Academy in Birkenshaw was rated ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted in October 2014.

It turned its fortunes around and was rated ‘good’ in all areas following an inspection by the education regulator in March last year.

Now the school has received an Educational Outcomes award from the Schools, Students and Teachers (SSAT) network for its exceptional performance in 2016.

Educational Outcomes data analysis from SSAT revealed that BBG was in the top 20 per cent of schools nationally for progress.

BBG head teacher Saira Luffman said the analysis measured children’s performance from when they started at the school to when they finished.

Mrs Luffman said: “We are delighted with the award and so proud of the students and staff at BBG for making that turnaround from a school being placed in special measures.

“Recognition of the relentless work and genuine efforts to improve the life chances of young people is greatly received.

“I think it just demonstrates the journey that the school has been on. This is another step on our journey.

“It is a stepping stone for us. We are on a journey to outstanding.

“We want to increase the life choices of the children at BBG, not only through academic excellence, but also in terms of opportunities.”

Sue Williamson, chief executive of the SSAT network, said: “It’s my great pleasure to commend BBG Academy on its excellent 2016 performance and to have the opportunity to highlight and share their great work at an SSAT Educational Outcomes celebration event.

“We know how hard teachers work to ensure the success of every child, and SSAT’s Educational Outcomes award recognises the professionalism, commitment and hard work of the leaders, teachers and students at BBG Academy.

“A big thank you and well done to the students, staff and governors.”

The school’s SSAT Educational Outcomes award will be presented at a regional celebration event held to draw attention to the work of high-achieving, improving and innovating schools and teachers.

The school’s ‘good’ Ofsted report said: “Around the school, pupils are polite and well-mannered. They are proud to be members of BBG Academy community and wear their uniform proudly and immaculately.”

It also said attendance had improved since the last inspection.
