This is the frightening moment a car burst into flames after crashing head-on into a lamppost.

It was caught on camera by Telegraph & Argus reader Lee Walton who was driving down Heights Lane, Heaton just before 7pm yesterday when he saw smoke rise up from the road in front of him.

Mr Walton from Bingley immediately pulled over and jumped out to see flames shoot out from beneath a family size car that had struck a lamppost, close to the Co-Op.

"What started off from just light smoke, suddenly turned into flames. I thought it was going to blow. We kept well back but there was a family with young children stood very close to it. I was about to shout if anyone had rung for a fire engine when I heard sirens.

"It took them less than 30 seconds to put it out from arriving, it was amazingly quick. I was amazed at how many people, drivers and a man on a motorbike, had just kept driving past it as though it was a normal occurrence.

"Whoever was in that car had a lucky escape. The front of the car had been ripped off in he crash. It had gone head first into the lamppost. I don't know how it happened but thankfully everyone looked to be okay."
