PEOPLE will be able to use the non-gender-specific title 'Mx' on official Bradford Council forms from now on.

The authority is introducing the option, as an alternative to Mr, Mrs, Miss or Ms, for those who don't identify themselves as male or female.

The move was first suggested by Councillor Richard Dunbar (Lab, Thornton and Allerton), to mark the end of LGBT history month, which ran throughout February.

Cllr Dunbar (pictured) said: "The Council needs to promote equality and inclusion as part of its community leadership role and to have this further choice on its forms is a big step forward in accepting and including people who do not identify as male or female.

"Being able to tick the box Mx reduces the anxiety that people are put through when faced with the dilemma of only being offered traditional binary titles."

It means Bradford is the largest English authority to start offering the prefix Mx on official forms. Brighton and Hove was the first to adopt its usage in 2013.
