A WOMAN was injured after a car apparently skidded into her after the driver lost control on black ice in Bradford today.

Police and the ambulance service were called to Old Road, Horton Bank Top, at about 8.30am.

Anthony Durkin, who lives near the scene, said two cars had lost control on the ice and one of them slid into the woman as she was standing next to her own car.

"She went up in the air and landed on her back," said Mr Durkin, 58. "I heard it first, then I looked out of the window and saw the driver of the car in distress. She was concerned for the lady on the floor.

"The poor driver had two young children in her car that were screaming and crying."

A spokesman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said the injured woman was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary by ambulance suffering from lower back pain.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the injured woman was aged in her 60s. He added that police had asked for gritters to be sent to grit the road.

Mr Durkin said: "Gritters used to come up and down here all the time, but not any more.

"It is not fair that we are not getting our roads gritted. It is so dangerous this morning."

A Bradford Council spokesman said: “Old Road has never been on the priority gritting list, but we have gritted it today after a request from the Police.

"As we have said previously, we will grit roads not on the priority gritting route, if we receive requests to do so, once we have completed priority routes.

"Anyone wishing to request an area of road is gritted can do so via our website or by ringing 431000.
“We have 23 gritting wagons and 26,000 tonnes of salt and grit over 600 miles of road every time we are advised of the potential for low temperatures leading to ice and snow and this is actually one of the higher levels of treatment across West Yorkshire. “
