Worth Valley councillor Glen Miller is taking up the baton from his famous namesake.

The Tory councillor - who lives at Shann Park, Keighley - will conduct the Glenn Miller tribute band on Sunday.

His bandleader debut, in Centenary Square, at Bradford, forms part of a Veterans Weekend.

Glen said: "It is purely a bit of fun. I was asked to do it obviously because of my name but also because I'm an ex-soldier.

"I will be donning a uniform and waving the stick' around but I confess I know absolutely nothing about conducting an orchestra. I'm assuming the musicians will know what they're doing!"

Glen served in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for 12 years.

His namesake volunteered for the US navy but was told it didn't need his services so wrote instead to the army in August 1942 and was subsequently accepted. He became part of the Army Specialists Corps, with the rank of captain, and created and directed his own 50-member military band. In December 1944 he set off to Paris to organise a Christmas concert but his plane was lost over the English Channel.

This weekend's extravaganza, centred on Centenary Square, will feature a mix of nostalgic music and dancing.

The tribute band will perform from 12.45-1.30pm and 2.30-3.15pm on Sunday, when veterans will be brought in from Keighley on an open-top bus.

Other attractions during the weekend will include Bradford Metropolitan Concert Band, Three Men and a Bass, the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service band, a 1940s sing-along with Shirley Britton, The Jolly Jivers and the Spen Valley Scout and Guide Band.
