TWO schoolfriends have been hailed local heroes for helping an air ambulance land safely to rescue a badly hurt woman who had fallen off a rope swing.

Callum Baxter, 14 and Rhys Sanasy, 13, from Queensbury School were honoured at a special assembly yesterday attended by the Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Geoff Reid.

The pals, who are both in Year 9, came to the aid of two people in separate incidents both on October 9 this year.

The first incident involved a woman who had fallen off her horse and was trapped under it, near to Callum’s house.

The horse kicked the woman in the chest as it was getting up but the two boys were able to help the woman back onto her feet and carry equipment for her making sure she was okay.

The boys then rode their bikes into nearby woods off a bridleway in West Scholes when they were stopped by a paramedic who asked for their help.

They were asked to go to the main road to guide ambulances to a woman who had fallen off a rope swing and broken her pelvis but the terrain was too difficult for the road vehicle. The boys then had to use their local knowledge to help an Air Ambulance crew find a more open spot to land before directed rescuers to the woman on foot.

Callum said: “We were just pleased to help” and Rhys added: ““We were just doing what any person would do.”

Their headteacher Liz Hart said: “They should be incredibly proud of their actions and quick-thinking that day.”

Cllr Reid said: “It is beyond doubt that Callum and Rhys’ interaction with both casualties and emergency services made a big difference and has made both the school and the city of Bradford proud.”
