A GROUP of talented youngsters who benefited from Comic Relief funding have put on their first dance performance.

Housing group Affinity Sutton, which has homes in Bradford, is working with Bradford College to provide dance sessions for 11-to-19-year-olds in the BD4 area.

The result was a dance group called BaD4mation - and after months of rehearsals they have just given their first performance, held at Affinity Sutton Community Centre in Tyersal.

Sarah Faulkner, youth co-ordinator at Affinity Sutton, said: “Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Alun Griffiths was in attendance showing his support and thoroughly enjoyed the performance and thought they all had done really well. The show was a huge success with family, friends and partners of the project turning out to watch.

“I am so proud of the girls and all the hard work they have put in to produce an amazing show. It’s great to see that the sessions really are inspiring young people in BD4.”

Jess Duggal, a neighbourhood investment officer for Affinity Sutton, said: “Affinity Sutton Youth Sports have been working with Bradford College to provide dance sessions in BD4 for the last six months.

“The project is part of a three-year Comic Relief bid offering a number of sessions in the BD4 area.

“We applied to Comic Relief to run a three-year project for the BD4 area looking at engaging young people aged between 11 and 19 years through sport.

“The sports we are providing are football, partnering with Bradford City, dance, and rugby, partnering with Bradford Bulls. The project also allows youth organisation e:merge to work with the young people to carry out social action projects within the area.

“Through the sport engagement we will then look to provide opportunities for those young people to gain accreditations, qualifications, possible work experience placements, and volunteer opportunities.”

The dance sessions will continue on Tuesdays at e:merge, Pawson Street, Tyersal, between 5pm and 6.30pm. The group will work towards their dance leaders award.
