A CONTROLLED explosion was carried out in Baildon today after a piece of ordnance from World War One was found on a building site.
The six pound shell was uncovered on Cliffe Lane West, where a housing development is being built, yesterday shortly before 3pm.
West Yorkshire Police contacted British Army bomb experts, who advised them to cordon off the scene.
Due to Army policies of not dealing with such devices in darkness, the bomb squad waited until daylight this morning to investigate the device.
They moved the shell away from the building site and carried out a controlled explosion shortly before 10am today.
It is thought the area may have been used as a testing range during the war.
