A Bradford slaughterhouse has been hit with a court bill of nearly £20,000 for breaking food transport rules.

Yorkshire Poultry Products Ltd, of Hammerton Street, Bradford, pleaded guilty to four charges regarding obstructing an animal health officer in the execution of her duties under the Animal Health Act, falsifying Animal Transport Certificates and failing to fully complete animal transport certificates.

The company was fined £3,000 for each offence in a prosecution brought by Bradford Council.

A director of the group also pleaded guilty to the same offences and was fined £2,000 for each.

The overall amount the company has to pay is £18,000 in fines with £1,625 costs.

John Major, the Council's head of service for environmental health, said: "This was a complicated case that involved very serious issues for the protection of public health and for animal welfare.

"This department will not hesitate to prosecute those who are not prepared to work with us to ensure the public stay safe and have quality food to eat."
