A Bradford head teacher has been appointed a National Leader in Education for "helping to transform the performance of schools in challenging circumstances".

Dr Nigel Jepson received a letter of thanks from Lord Andrew Adonis, parliamentary under secretary of state for schools, informing him of the accolade and thanking him for helping to transform the fortunes of Carlton Bolling College and Rhodesway School.

Dr Jepson, executive head at both schools, is now one of only 30 National Leaders of Education throughout the country. Candidates must demonstrate "outstanding leadership" in schools in challenging circumstances over a sustained period of time.

He said: "Since being appointed, in October 2005, to this dual role at Carton Bolling College and Rhodesway School I have found it very high profile.

"Undoubtedly, success could not have been achieved without considerable support from students, staff, parents and governors."

Dr Jepson will now offer key advice to schools in difficulty throughout the country, including those in special measures.

He may also be asked to advise Government ministers on education issues.

In his letter to Mr Jepson, Lord Adonis wrote: "Your initial role in helping to transform the performance of schools in challenging circumstances is a major part of our continued efforts to improve the system at large.

"There is an urgent need to get schools still struggling, despite other interventions, back on the right track quickly.

"We need you, as one of our best school leaders and your leadership team to help us ensure those children most in need of a good education get opportunities they deserve."

Dr Jepson is the first teacher in Bradford to receive the prestigious award.

In December 2004, Carlton Bolling College in Undercliffe remained in Ofsted's special measures category after inspectors noted serious weaknesses.

However, in April this year, little more than two year's on, the inner-city school was awarded an overall rating of "outstanding", the first secondary in Bradford to do so.

Rhodesway School also emerged from special measures late last year under Dr Jepson's leadership.
