A DOG died in a house fire in Bradford earlier today.

Fire crews were called to a property on Edge End Gardens, Buttershaw, at about 12.20am.

A spokesman for Odsal station said the dog had already died by the time they arrived, but added that they managed to save a cat by giving it oxygen therapy.

On the cause of the fire, the spokesman said: "A lamp had been knocked over onto some material that has overheated and sparked into a fire. Over a period of time, it got to the right temperature."

The owner of the semi-detached house was out at the time, but suffered smoke inhalation when she returned and tried to get into the property.

The fire service spokesman said the woman was 58 and drove herself to Bradford Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Two neighbours were also taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. They dialled 999 after smoke filtered into their house.

The house where the blaze happened suffered fire damage in the living room and was smoke-logged throughout, said the fire service.

The spokesman said the property did not have working smoke alarms and urged people to be wary of fire safety.
