An inquest has heard tragic details of how a 36-year-old man lost his battle with alcoholism.

Adrian Briggs's mother said that he was "badly let down" by the authorities because there was not enough help for her son who had tried to get himself off the drink.

The coroner was told that his parents had brought Adrian to live with them at their home in Hillcrest Road, Queensbury, to try to help him with his problems.

But he had carried on drinking and eventually died after taking an accidental overdose of alcohol and pain killers last December.

The night before he died he had been to the pub with his mum and dad and had carried on drinking when they got back home. David and Ruth Briggs had gone to bed but Adrian stayed up drinking gin.

The Bradford hearing was told that when Mrs Briggs came down in the early hours she found her son slumped on the chair.

Despite attempts to revive him he was pronounced dead in hospital.

Mrs Briggs told Coroner Roger Whittaker that there was not enough help available for those with alcohol problems.

She said: "He knew he needed help and he tried. He tried his best but he didn't get the back-up."

"I feel that he was badly let down."

Mr Whittaker recorded a verdict of misadventure and said there had been a long history of alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

He said: "His parents did the best they could trying to wean him away from spirits and I can understand their frustration at not being able to get him into a place where he might be detoxified."
