FRIENDS and family of a mum-of-four fighting bowel cancer set off tomorrow on the latest fundraising initiative to collect money towards potentially life-saving treatment.

Thousands of pounds are desperately needed to pay for Sally Major from Silsden to get the latest treatment not available to her on the NHS.

A crowdfunding campaign has already been set up by her mum, Michele Hinitt, to help the 32-year-old.

Mrs Major was diagnosed last year with advanced stage four bowel cancer. She had been to see GPs more than ten times over four years and was repeatedly told it was Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Her cancer was found to have had spread to her liver, both lungs, lymph nodes and stomach wall lining and although intensive chemotherapy helped at first, some tumours remained.

Doctors told Mrs Major the cancer was incurable based on chemotherapy treatment, and gave her three years to live but she and her supporters are determined not to give up. They have been looking at alternative treatments including robotic radiosurgery which Mrs Major has since tried and are now looking at getting her immunotherapy at a cost of around £120,000 at the Hallwang Clinic in Germany.

Friend Nicky Saunders, from Carr Road, Shipley, and a group of others hope to boost the funding pot by walking 13 miles along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal from Dockfield Road into the heart of the city at Millennium Square, all dressed as sheep with a photo of Mrs Major and her family on their backs.

“Sally is an amazing woman. She is being so strong. We want to raise as much money for her as possible on Saturday to get the help she deserves,” she said Ms Saunders.

On Sunday, December 4 another group of friends will be abseiling 100ft down the side of the Jurys Inn Bradford.

As well as battling her condition, Mrs Major has also been raising awareness through her own Twitter account @SOsally_canwait, urging people to be aware of bowel cancer symptoms earlier and insist on getting tested. People can donate money by visiting crowdfunding.justgiving.com/michele-hinitt.
