A MAN believed to have the world’s longest marriage has died at the incredible age of 110.

Karam Chand, of Girlington, Bradford, died of natural causes in hospital, his family said. He was just six weeks away from celebrating his 111th birthday.

Mr Chand and his wife, Kartari, 103, hit headlines across the world last year when they celebrated their astonishing 90th wedding anniversary.

The couple have been guests-of-honour at many community events and were invited to open The Broadway shopping centre, alongside star Alexandra Burke, last November.

Mr Chand lived with his wife, their son, Paul, and his family at their home in Girlington.

Paul paid tribute to his father’s extraordinary life and said his family were devastated by their loss.

He said: “Not many people live to that age.”

Mr Chand was born in 1905 into a farming family in the Punjab during the height of the British Raj, at a time when it took six weeks to reach India via the Suez Canal.

He had an arranged marriage, wedding his bride in a Sikh ceremony in 1925.

They came to Bradford in 1965, when Mr Chand replaced his hard work as a farmer with equally hard work in the city’s woollen mills.

Their family now consists of four generations with a huge family tree stretching down from Mr and Mrs Chand and including eight children, 27 grandchildren and dozens of great-grandchildren.

Mr Chand had said in the past: “Eat and drink what you want but in moderation. I have never held back from enjoying my life.”

He had recently given up his one cigarette a day but enjoyed an occasional tot of whisky.

The Chand family had put their parents’ incredible longevity down to their hard-working lives when they were younger, a lifetime of eating clean food and their inter-generational living arrangements.

The couple never argued, according to their family.

Mr Chand’s death, on Tuesday, means his marriage lasted 90 years and 291 days in total.

Although this was believed to be the world record, it had never officially been recognised by Guinness World Records.

The oldest Guinness-recorded marriage is the 86-year union of American couple Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher, both of whom have since died.

The oldest man in the UK is an anonymous resident of Claygate, Surrey, who is 111, according to the website Oldest in Britain.

The oldest British woman is Bessie Camm, of Rotherham, who is 112.
