THE sister of a man who died after being shot outside his home in Bradford has described him as the "greatest brother".

Imran Khan's sister Jawaria broke down in tears as she spoke about her 30-year-old sibling.

She said: "He was the greatest brother you could ever have.

"He was always there for his family and people used to look up to him."

A friend of Mr Khan, who did not want to be named, said: "He was a brilliant lad, a good lad, and humble with the kids. He played football with the local kids.

"He had a heart. He would always do something for the community.

"We have lost a really good person in the community. He was always humble and polite and happy and playful."

Detectives have started a murder investigation after Mr Khan died after being shot outside his home in Round Street, West Bowling.

Two men, aged 22 and 21, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are in custody.

The shooting happened at about 8pm yesterday (Monday, June 6).

Police said the victim, who has not been officially named, sadly died a short time later as a result of his injuries. A post mortem examination is expected to take place later today.

Police are treating the incident as a targeted attack and have asked for anyone with information to come forward

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Scott, of the Homicide and Major Enquiries Team, said: "Our enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances of what happened and the events leading up to it.

"A man has sadly lost his life and I would urge anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the Round Street area at around 8pm last night to contact us, so we can fully investigate this incident."

Witnesses said the shooting victim was one of two men engaged in a "verbal confrontation" on St Stephen's Road about an hour and a half before the incident.

One witness said: "They were shouting at each other, there was no fighting or anything."

A number of streets off Gaythorne Road in West Bowling are still cordoned off today, with police officers standing guard on cordons across Round Street and St Stephen's Road. 

It is understood the man, named locally as Imran 'Kalay' Khan, was shot outside his home.

Waleed Khan, 32, a friend of the victim, said: "It has struck the whole community in West Bowling. It is terrible.”

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said said he heard three shots.

He added: "It is terrifying and scary. It is unbelievable."

Another resident said her five-year-old daughter had been playing outside and came running in shouting: "Something scary has happened outside."

The girl said she had seen the victim lying in the street.

The woman added: "I heard screaming. It is very scary.

"The children thought some fireworks had gone off. She saw someone on the ground.

"We tried to help the family. His mother was screaming.

"You don't expect this on your doorstep. It is shocking."

Another resident said her children were too scared to sleep after they saw police outside their house.

"They couldn't sleep here," she said. "They were too scared.

"It is difficult to believe what has happened."

This morning, police were also guarding an area surrounding a burnt-out car at the back of the nearby Khidmat Centre.

When the Telegraph & Argus visited the scene, crime scene investigation and scientific support vehicles were in attendance, with a police van blocking off the entrance to Round Street from Gaythorne Road. 

A separate cordon had been put in place half way down Round Street, being patrolled by officers. 

A number of back streets were also cordoned off, including a section half way along St Stephen's Road.

One resident said he knew the man who had been injured, saying people knew him locally as Kalay, but that his real name was Imran. 

He said he was around 29 or 30 years old, and married. 

He said the victim had been outside his house in Round Street at about 8pm when he was shot by someone from a car. 

He said the victim was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

"All his family gathered around, and he was bleeding from his head. 

"I've been told they have all gone to the hospital. His condition must be critical.

"I've no idea what it was about, but people are saying they know who did it. 

"It's very sad."

Another resident who contacted the T&A also said the man had been shot in the head, also saying that he had left the scene in the air ambulance. 

They said the man may have been being chased prior to the shooting. 

"I've been told it was an Asian male called Kalay who has been shot, and it happened in the snicket near Gaythorne Road. He was being chased," they said. 

"There was police dogs, loads of police cars, and an ambulance, as well as the air ambulance and police helicopter.

"He was in a really bad way."

Earlier, West Yorkshire Police issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward. 

A spokesman said: "Officers were called to Round Street, Bradford, at about 8pm to a report a man had been seriously injured in a disturbance outside a property.

"Emergency services attended and located a 30-year-old man who had suffered a serious head injury.

"The man was taken to hospital where he is being treated for injuries which are life-threatening.

"A scene is now in place on Round Street as officers carry out initial investigations."

Detective Superintendent Simon Atkinson, of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, added: "Early enquiries are ongoing into this incident to determine precisely what has taken place.

“A 30-year-old man has suffered what are life-threatening injuries in an incident outside a property on Round Street at just before 8pm and police would like to speak to anyone who saw what occurred or has information which could assist with the enquiry."

Late last night and into the early hours of this morning, people have been reacting to the incident on social media.

Police have also taped off a back alleyway between St Stephen's Road and Round Street.

Leah Burke posted on Facebook to say: "Just as the gun and knife crime (figures) are released, another gun crime to (add to) the figures."
