Emergency services at the scene of the crash

Police, firefighters, and paramedics were called to the scene of the incident in Sunbridge Road, near the Sun Hotel.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to free a male backseat passenger from one of the cars, a purple Renault Clio.

He was given oxygen by paramedics as the rescue took place, but was conscious and talking to emergency services.

After fire crews removed the rear of the car, he was transported to a waiting ambulance and taken to hospital.

The crash occurred at about midday.

The front of the Renault suffered major damage, including a smashed front windscreen.

The other car, a silver Hyundai, sustained damage to its nearside.

The other occupants of the two vehicles appeared to be uninjured.

Benjamin Simmons, who lives in a flat near the scene, said he heard a huge bang as the two cars crashed.

He said: "At the scene are two fire engines, two first response cars, two ambulances and a horde of police, they're cutting one of the cars open, saw them take the boot door off."

James Tinsley, who saw the aftermath of the collision, said: "I've lived here just three months and have seen over 15 crashes at this junction."

The cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed.
