PEOPLE living in Bradford are being asked to help decide the region’s policing priorities over the next five years.

The Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for West Yorkshire, Mark Burns-Williamson, is urging everyone to take part in a public consultation to help create his action plan.

Your Priorities, Your Plan will be shaped by a survey as well as face-to-face meetings and a web chat.

Councillor Abdul Jabar, Bradford Council’s executive member for neighbourhoods and community safety, said the local authority would keep working with the PCC to secure the resources the district needed.

“Bradford Safer and Stronger Communities Partnership will continue to tackle the issues that are really important to the people of Bradford like safeguarding vulnerable children and adults from harm and abuse, tackling drugs, alcohol, anti-social behaviour and hate crime, reducing burglary, robbery and theft and working with victims and local communities to improve safety and community resilience,” he said.

“We will need to continue to build on our positive working relationship with the PCC, and ensure that Bradford remains high on the Commissioner’s agenda.”

Councillor Simon Cooke, the leader of the Bradford Conservative group, identified two main issues in Bradford.

“I think the things that are most concerning are firstly burglary, which while it may not be as common as it used to be is still really worrying and upsetting for people,” he said.

“And secondly is bad driving. I know the Telegraph & Argus has been running a campaign about it, and it’s something that really concerns people, and every single day I see people driving through red lights, which is the main problem for me.”

Mr Burns-Williamson, who was re-elected as PCC earlier this month, said he would listen to the community and work with the police to keep people safe.

“I want to hear about your priorities and what you want to see happen in your local area to make sure you feel safe in your community,” he said.

“I want to make sure that you have a voice and that I listen loud and clear to people’s priorities.

“These priorities will be reflected in the new Police and Crime Plan that sets the direction for policing and community safety over the next five years.”

He also asked people to complete his survey and encourage others to do the same.

“It is vitally important to me that your voice is heard and as your Police and Crime Commissioner I continue to listen to you first and work with the police and many other organisations to reflect and deliver on your priorities,” he added.
