The JOHN CARR 5K SERIES retains its very fast course at Esholt – but now the start and finish is at the Apperley Bridge end of the Yorkshire Water grounds.

Chip-timing also allows for a larger field, with 371 finishers on May 4, and 332 last Wednesday.

Arguably the top performance so far was by Ilkley under-17, Cameron Reilly, who ran 16min 35sec to finish ninth last week.

But a host of juniors have performed excellently – Euan Brennan (Ilkley U17; 16:51); Alexander Booth (Leeds City U20; 17:05); Oliver Daffern (Bradford Grammar U20; 17:33).

Spenborough’s Joe Sagar, winner of the Bradford 10K in March, has been third and second and may be hoping to win the final race tonight.

Tom Adams (Ilkley) and Dan Garbutt (Durham City) beat him in the first race, with Adams running 15:04, and Scott Harrington (Otley; 15:41) in the second.

Queensbury’s Tom Collinge was 11 seconds off his personal best in the second run (16:23), finishing seventh and sixth successively.

Claire Duck (Leeds City) always favours this race. She ran her lifetime best here (16min 20sec), which placed her fourth nationwide in 2013. This year, her 16:50 currently places her 20th in the UK.

In the second race, host-club Saltaire Striders’ Hannah Oldroyd took the honours in 17:43.

Former Saltaire star, Pete Pyrah (Bingley) returned to his old haunts to win the over-60 category in 18:49.

This weekend saw the YORKSHIRE TRACK-AND-FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS at Cudworth.

Victors in the senior age-group included Lee Athersmith (Wharfedale; 3000m steeplechase; 10min 14.8), Jordan Brandsberg (Skyrac; 800m; 1:52.32) and Zara Knappy (Keighley & Craven; 1500m; 4:39.10).

Bingley’s Phil Jones was second in the senior discus (37.23m).

Demetric Nelson (Bingley) was third in both the 100m (10.91sec) and 200m (22.38sec) and Chris Thornton (Skyrac) likewise in the 400m (53.60sec).

In the under-20s two Bradford-Airedale women performed well: Lydia Farley (third in the 3000m in 11min 19.1sec) and Paris Kaur (fourth in the 800m; a personal best of 2:42.92).
