THE remarkable rise of Skyrac AC continues with a fine third place in the NORTHERN TRACK AND FIELD LEAGUE division two.

The Nunroyd Park club's rivals, Leeds City, were fourth in their division two region behind Rotherham, Lincoln and Chesterfield. Meanwhile, Holmfirth won their west-central second division, with Spenborough placed fifth.

City of York, in a home fixture at the Heslington university track were clear winners in the north-eastern group. But Skyrac were close behind Gateshead Harriers, with Morpeth Harriers fourth.

Jordan Bransberg won the 800m A-string race in 1min 58.9sec and junior, Alex Pagdin, the 1,500m by a distance in 4min 8.6sec.

Robert Russell won both the hammer (35.37) and shot putt (11.51m), while Samuel Gatewood’s 5.84m was best long jump.

In the B-string events, Skyrac’s winners were Chris Thornton in an excellent 53.4sec (400m), Ian Cotton (hammer, 26.35m), and James Tait (discus, 35.00m).

Spenborough’s A-string winners Darren Thomas (discus, 34.28m), Nick Crimmen (shot, 11.14m) and Fiona Thomas (shot, 11.00m) showed that their strength is in the throwing events.

In division three, Bingley made an early bid for promotion, finishing runners-up to Scunthorpe, staying ahead of Cleethorpes and Hallamshire.

Oliver Robinson (400m and 400m hurdles, and part of the victorious 4x400m relay), Aidan Leech (200m and long relay), Sarah Boyle (discus and shot), Lucy Oldroyd (triple jump) and Natalie Morris (high jump) were all Bingley A-string winners.

Bradford-Airedale were understrength for their long trip in division four to Grantham, with captain Chris Hainsworth being the main scorer in the throws.

The Yorkshire track and field championships take place this weekend at Cudworth.

This Sunday sees a series of fun runs and trail races around Harden Woods and the St Ives Estate.

Registration is on the day at Harden Primary School hall, from 9am, with a race for key stage 1 children (and younger) at 10am and key stage 2 race at 10.15.

The six-mile trail race is for runners aged 16 or older, starting at 11am, with a two-mile fun run for all ages at 11.05. £2 entry except for the senior race (£5).
