A STREET in a new housing development in the Allerton area of Bradford is set to be named after a prominent former councillor and Lord Mayor.

Members of the Bradford West Area Committee have been advised to approve plans to dedicate a street in the Chevet Mount development off Allerton Lane to the late Valerie Binney, who passed away in July 2014.

Under the proposals, the allocated street name of Yarm Drive would be replaced by 'Valerie Binney Drive'.

The site is being developed by Stephen Walkden to house a 50-bed care home and 42 sheltered dwellings, and a Council report said it was the developer who first suggested honouring Mrs Binney.

The proposal has been backed by Councillor Malcolm Sykes (Cons, Thornton and Allerton), who has submitted an obituary to Mrs Binney, who suffered from Motor Neurone Disease, in support of the application.

The family of the late Mrs Binney, who spent 19 years as a Conservative councillor for Thornton and Allerton and served as Lord Mayor of Bradford from 2005 to 2006, have been consulted and are said to be happy with the naming suggestion.

The Bradford West Area Committee will decide on the plans during its meeting at City Hall tomorrow night.
