MOSSY lava-flows, hot springs and geysers welcomed a dozen Saltaire Striders to Saturday's REYKJAVIK MARATHON FESTIVAL.

Will Kerr was an excellent seventh in the half-marathon in 75min 31sec (chip-timed).

Local athlete Hlynur Andrésson took an early lead and held a 90-second gap at the 10km point, winning in 69min 35sec.

Two British runners, Tom Fairbrother and Harold Wyber, ran together till Fairbrother broke away near the finish to come second in 72:02.

Kerr was part of the chasing group of five. An Italian broke decisively from this group in the second half, as the course hair-pinned into the suburbs.

The remaining four fought until the finish, with an American and another Icelander beating Kerr in the sprint.

Stewart Spink, Jeremy Wright, Gareth Ward, Darren Longhorn, Dairine Nethercott and Vicki Hussain were also part of the 2,151 finishers.

Five other races and distances were available. Kath Stone and Lindsey Pearson ran the 10K from the start-finish line opposite Government House on Laekjargata, then around the city lake, past the university and then around the headland before returning past the harbour.

Martin Fillingham, Richard Stone and Will Collinson attempted the full marathon, which also took the 10K route before looping round the suburbs. Fillingham ran 3hr 6min 44sec to finish 49th of the 1,062 runners.

Saturday's BURNSALL CLASSIC FELL RACE was won by Sam Tosh, with Bingley's Rob Jebb close second.

Clubmate Ian Holmes became the first man to have won both the fell classic and the ten-mile road race.

Despite the hot, muggy weather, he ran 56min 1sec, a minute ahead of Ian Livesey (Barlick) and Julian Hood (Skipton).

Otley's Julian Mawson was a fine fifth, breaking the difficult hour barrier.

Hannah Oldroyd was first lady in 13th, with Halifax's Sarah Cumber close behind.

Any budding Jess Ennis-Hills are invited to a TRACK AND FIELD OPEN EVENING at Horsfall Stadium next Wednesday (September 2) (6.30pm).
