A BRADFORD soldier killed in a bomb blast while serving in Afghanistan is set to have a street named in his honour.

Private Christopher Kershaw, 19, was one of six soldiers who died when their armoured car was blown up in southern Afghanistan in March 2012.

Now a plan to name a street after him has been proposed for a new housing estate in Idle, where he grew up.

The street name would be on the former site of Garrowby House, Queensway House and Oakwood House off Thorp Garth in Idle, which is being redeveloped into 22 homes for rent by social housing group Incommunities.

The street naming proposal was suggested by Pte Kershaw's family, who contacted Councillor Dominic Fear (Lib Dem, Idle and Thackley), and is now set to be recommended for approval at Bradford East's Area Committee meeting tomorrow.

If given the green light by committee members, it will be called Christopher's Court.

There is also a proposal for a plaque to be added to the site explaining Pte Kershaw's life and legacy and Cllr Fear also plans to contact The Yorkshire Regiment over a possible memorial park in the soldier's honour at the housing site.

Pte Kershaw's dad, Brian Kershaw, said: "It's a big honour.

"It is a legacy for him, he will never be forgotten. His name will appear on all of the letters sent to that street.

"It will be emotional when the street sign is put up. There will never be full closure for us after Christopher's death, but this is another little step forward."

Cllr Fear said: "It's another tribute to Pte Kershaw.

"It is not the first and won't be the last one. If I can help Chris' family I will, they are really keen for his name to keep on.

"There is a strong connection with Idle and the Armed Forces. The area has a strong military history."

Jez Lester, Incommunities assistant chief executive, asset management, said: "We feel it would be a very fitting tribute to name this new road at our latest homes development in honour of Private Chris Kershaw - a brave fallen hero and local resident."

Other soldiers killed in Afghanistan have also had streets named in their honour.

Martin Bell Way, named after Private Martin Bell who was killed in 2011, is part a new Keepmoat housing development off West Royd Road in Wrose, Shipley, and a business park off Buck Lane, Baildon, is named Sapper Jordan Rossi Park in memory of Sapper Jordan Rossi who was killed in 2009.
