A COUNCILLOR has been attacked by a dog at a house in Bradford.

Lynda Cromie suffered deep wounds when she was bitten on the arm and leg as she visited a woman's home in Hazelhurst Grove, Queensbury.

Cllr Cromie said she had been invited round by the woman to discuss a benefits issue, when the attack happened.

"It ripped my arm," said Cllr Cromie, who described the dog as a cross between a Labrador and a bulldog. "When I looked at my arm, all this fat was dripping out."

Cllr Cromie (Ind, Queensbury) had gone round to speak to the resident at her request.

"She had asked if I could help with a problem," said Cllr Cromie. "I went round and I could hear the dogs barking a while before she came to the door.

"She said to come in and wait until she got the dogs upstairs, before coming into the kitchen."

But she added: "The kitchen door flew open and the dogs came towards me. I thought they would just bound at me.

"The little one yapped at me, but the black one gripped my leg and arm. I said it was biting me."

Cllr Cromie managed to get out of the property's back door and the dog-owner slammed it shut.

"I was not scared until it started biting me," she said. "I had a coat on and a long-sleeve, thick jumper and it grabbed my arm. The woman could not get it off.

"I'm not scared of dogs. Eighty per cent of houses I go to there are dogs - I expect dogs to bound on me and they normally calm down then.

"But I am frightened of dogs now. It was a terrible shock."

Cllr Cromie went to hospital yesterday and has been told that she does not currently need stitches.

She also revealed that her husband and fellow councillor Paul Cromie had visited the same house a couple of weeks earlier, but got no further than the gate because of the dog.

He said: "Lynda is badly shaken but okay and resting. We have reported the incident to the police in case the dog attacks anyone else."

Cllr Lynda Cromie added: "The woman told police she was going to muzzle the dog and go on a PDSA course. I want someone to go back in a couple of months to see.

"I would not like to read about a child being bitten."

Police confirmed the dog's owner had been spoken to by officers about the incident which occurred on Wednesday at about 3.30pm.

PS Richard Sheard, of Bradford Central neighbourhood policing team, said: "Police were made aware of an incident that took place at Hazelhurst Grove, and, at the request of the complainant have spoken to the dog-owner who has been advised regarding managing the dog's behaviour.

"The victim has been advised of the police action."
