THE Andrew Allison Memorial Trial again attracted many competitors to remote Holgate on Sunday despite the fact that two British championship trials and three local events filled the Sunday trials schedule.

The bonus for the organising Richmond Motor Club was wall to wall sunshine for competitors and officials. The Clerk of Course David Peacock and his assistants plotted a testing but low scoring course featuring 12 sections and three laps. The first five sections crossed the Moresdale Gill stream and ventured out onto Holgate Pastures where traces of the track to Orgate Falls is still visible.

The section order was changed on Sunday so the 111 starters crossed the beck and headed towards Braithwaite’s Ghyll and five sections. Barry Watson was enjoying the sunshine at section three while Dave Nesham was stationed at the next hazard where the steep climb defied many but winner Will Reynolds gave his Beta the full treatment to clean three times.

Phil Alderson was matching Reynolds all the way but a two on the last lap gave Will the break he required. Sausage maker Paul Dennis suffered a panic attack before the start when discovered his riding boots were still at home but Uncle Brian loaned him a pair and also gave up his ride for his nephew.

The course then tracked last year’s sections adjacent to the farm where the penultimate climb featured three big steps for the hard course contestants. The easy route turned left halfway up but some effort was required by all the riders.

Most of the hard course riders managed the section but Norton gas rig technician Roger Williams had his boots down twice. Shane Monkman posted the best green course ride with a single mark on lap two. Only three Over Forty competitors scaled the gradient without penalty. Mark Proudlock was the best and also the class winner.

EBORACUM MC kickstarted their popular series of Club trials on Saturday at the excellent venue of Hovingham Quarries.

The clerk of course laid out a testing four-lap ten-section course for the 65 competitors. Stockton’s Rob Carter, riding his Gas Gas machines, could not match Pocklington’s Olly Kendra who won with and unpenalised ride on the last five sections where Carter dropped four marks. Malton's Ben Myers has upped his game with some solid rides maintained his form on Saturday to win Intermediate class from the experienced Gary Collinson by more than 20 marks.

There must be something in the Hovingham air as it boosted Ouseburn's Simon Gill into top position, as he also blew the competition away to win the Over Fifties class from Masham’s Tim Marrison by fourteen marks. His unpenalized ride on section three was never matched, Stewart Wainwright came close on one penalty

THERE was glorious sunshine for the Northallerton’s Clubman trial at Girsby on Sunday. Nigel Rooksby was back in action to plot the four-lap, ten section course. It appeared to suit the much improved Chris Brown from Middlesbrough as he edged the win from Daniel Herriot, with Yarm's David Clarke and Egton's Colin Bailey producing clean rides to win their respective classes.

The entry of 60 riders included a class of 20 Twin Shocks and the first section proved tricky where Moira Simpson observed, cutting up after the first lap, only Jamie Thompson remaining unpenalized. Northallerton's Andy Keel topped the Twin Shock brigade from the two Guisborough lads, Rick Jackson and Joe Buckworth, who kept the pressure on all day and Buckworth was back aboard his 320cc SWM.

JAMES DABILL stamped his authority on the opening event in the British trials on Saturday at West Horsley by winning the event by a huge margin from Michael Brown. The 20-penalty gap between first and second just emphasized the whitewash.

National trials winner Sam Haslam finished in third place 50 penalties behind Dabill and his Vertigo machine. Jack Price was the best of the Yorkies in seventh place. It made for bad reading. Dan Peace ninth heading Billy Bolt and Andrew Chilton. Richard Sadler and Rob Waite were 18th and 20th. The best northern expert was John Crinson in fifth place ahead of Dan Thorpe.

At least the youth results brought a smile with Jack Peace and Sam Johnson on the rostrum. The consolation was that the Kirkbymoorside youth took Truro’s Toby Martyn to a tiebreak decider but the Cornish boy rode more sections without penalty than Jack. Sunday was a hard day at the office. Dabill won with Brown trailing by a slightly greater margin and Haslam third. Dan Peace and Jack Price were seventh and eighth. Sadler climbed to 13th. Birstall motorcycle instructor Dan won the expert class. Richmond’s James and Jack Stones produced a fourth and sixth. Martyn won the youth class but Johnson was one of 18 retirees.

THE weekend action features the annual Ilkley Grand National on Beamsley where the time factor decides the result. No roads, just bleak treacherous moorland. Sixty riders start and maybe half will retire. Vantage points are Beamsley Beacon, How Gill and Kex Beck on the A59 trunk road. Do not park on the A59. Also on Saturday at Swale Farm, Grinton, Chloe Richardson and Nick Hunt will stage the Children in Need Charity trial commencing at 1pm.
