Most of us will readily admit that we don't do enough exercise, and we've all got our reasons.

We don't have time, we can't afford to join a gym, we're too exhausted after work or looking after the children. But the fact is, with more than half of the local population admitting to doing no exercise at all, it's time to try to put the excuses away.

Lack of exercise and poor diet doesn't just turn us into overweight couch potatoes. It can lead to very serious health problems, including type two diabetes and even cancers.

So it is in everyone's best interests to try to live a little healthier, and Bradford health bosses are going to do their bit to try to make things a little easier for us to do just that.

One interesting idea is that existing "urban spaces" can be re-tooled to provide safe spaces for families to exercise as part of their daily routine, so that very little extra effort or planning is needed to encompass a healthier lifestyle.

This is eminently sensible. With the best will in the world, even the starkest warnings are not going to drive people to the gyms or swimming pools if they simply do not have the time or cannot afford the fees.

But encouraging people to do more walking, running and cycling in designated areas that are safe, family-friendly and car-free might just go a little way towards getting more people off their sofas and out into the fresh air.

We all know that something must be done to ease the health timebomb, and the easier it is for everyone to get exercise, the better.
